Gut Health in Parkinson’s

Marta Camacho trained as a neuropsychologist and started doing research in Neuroscience in 2012 at the Champalimaud Foundation in Lisbon, Portugal. She is currently the Clinical PD Cohort coordinator at the Clinical Neuroscience Department in the University of Cambridge and is conducting a PhD in the role of the gut in Parkinson’s disease progression. Marta is an enthusiastic science communicator and a proud member of the RIGeast Committee.

Wednesday 23 June 2021, from 10.30-11.30am

Parkinson’s is classically known as a movement disorder but it is often accompanied by other important features that gravely impact people’s well-being. Gut problems are often present before people manifest Parkinson’s motor symptoms and constipation is now considered a risk factor for developing the condition. But what if a person already has Parkinson’s, do gut problems affect their disease process? Marta Camacho is researching the main gut problems affecting people with Parkinson’s and whether these play a role in the disease progression.

Using genetics to understand and find treatments for Parkinson’s

Mina Ryten is Professor of Clinical Genetics at UCL and an Honorary Consultant in Clinical Genetics at Great Ormond Street Hospital. In this video she explains what genes can tell us about the causes of Parkinson’s.

Friday 23rd April 2021
10.15am – 11.30 noon

Although most cases of Parkinson’s have no known cause, some, particularly early on-set forms, can be linked to a specific gene. We now know of over 90 genes that have been identified as risk factors for PD. Collectively they provide clues about the biological mechanisms underlying the disease. This field provides an excellent example of how “omic” sciences are revolutionising the way in which researchers are collaborating globally to find a cure.
